Manage Blurry Vision with our San Antonio Optometrist

If your vision goes blurry, you'll likely experience frustration in various areas of your life, including work, leisure, and sport. At The Vision Place, our San Antonio optometry staff can help you understand what's causing your blurry vision and what can be done to alleviate it.

Common Conditions Causing Blurry Vision

Blurry vision makes things difficult to see clearly, including objects that are close up and objects that are far away. First, understand that any sudden development of blurry vision could indicate a serious medical problem, including retinal detachment or cerebrovascular accident (stroke). If you or a loved one experiences sudden and persisting blurry vision (with or without other symptoms such as eye pain and headaches), call 911 immediately.

Fortunately, most causes of blurry vision are not considered medical emergencies—but blurry vision can progress to more complete or total vision loss., so consulting with an eye doctor is essential. Common causes include:

  • Refractive errors, like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (irregularities in a curvature of the eye or lens), and presbyopia (age-related farsightedness)
  • Migraine headaches: migraines cause severe head pain and are often preceded by/experienced with blurry vision and other symptoms
  • Pregnancy: hormone-related changes may lead to dry and blurry vision in women who are expecting or recently postpartum
  • Medication side effects (including oral medications or eye drops)
  • Wearing contacts for too long
  • LASIK surgery (common in the initial recovery period following laser eye surgery)
  • Chronic dry eye, as caused by allergies, certain autoimmune disorders, and other conditions which disrupt the tear film normally protecting the eyes
  • Underlying eye health conditions, including cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma; these conditions are generally progressive and can cause significant vision loss if left untreated

The Role of Regular Eye Exam For Managing Blurry Vision

It's not possible to know exactly what's causing your blurry vision unless you undergo a comprehensive eye exam. Routine eye exams with a San Antonio optometrist are important because we can detect early warning signs of more serious eye health conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, even before they start showing symptoms such as blurry vision. Early detection allows for earlier treatment, which can protect your eyesight!

By examining your eyes, running appropriate tests, and assessing your personal and family history, our staff will be able to manage your blurry vision using the appropriate treatment techniques. These may include prescription eyewear, medication changes, nutritional recommendations, and more.
