Sun Protection at The Vision Place in San Antonio

Most people remember to wear sunglasses to protect their eyes during the summer. However, it is also important to wear glasses for sun protection during the other seasons in order to protect your eyes from UV rays. Our optometrist at The Vision Place in San Antonio would like to remind you to wear your UV blocking sunglasses year-round.

The Importance of Protecting Your Eyes from the Sun Year Round

When you walk outside during the day, your eyes are exposed to UV radiation, including UV-A and UV-B. These two forms of radiation can post immediate and long-term threats to your eyes. If you are exposed to excessively bright sunlight, you may get a sunburn on your eyes, which is called photokeratitis. This condition can cause painful and red eyes for a short period of time. If you spend excessive amounts of time outside in the sun, working or participating in sports without sunglasses, your risk for developing AMD and cataracts may increase.

Protecting Your Eyes from UV Rays at Our Optometry Clinic

Our optometrist, Dr. Palomino, recommends being vigilant about your eyes when you go outside during the day, regardless of the season. This means choosing the right pair of UV blocking glasses for your lifestyle. If you only go outside for short periods of time or while driving your car, a standard pair of UV blocking glasses should suffice. However, if you work outside or regularly spend hours in the sun playing sports or exercising, you may want additional protection in the form of wrap-around sunglasses.

Getting the Maximum Protection from Your UV Blocking Glasses

When you choose a pair of glasses for sun protection, you should make sure that the lenses are free of any distortions and that objects appear clear. For the best color rendering, you should choose lenses that are gray or have a gray hue to the lenses. When it comes to blocking the suns harmful UV-A and UV-B rays, you should purchase sunglasses that state that they provide 100 percent UV protection and that they block at least 75 percent of all visible light.

Ask About UV Blocking Sunglasses During Your Next Eye Exam

Our eye doctor can recommend the right prescription or non-prescription sunglasses at your next exam. If you wear contacts, our optometrist can recommend contacts that contain UV blocking technology. However, you should also wear non-prescription sunglasses along with your contacts when outside.
