“Pink eye” is the popular term given to inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eyes. It can be a very uncomfortable condition, causing severe redness around the eyes, itching and discharge. Pink eye will sometimes resolve on its own, but in other cases, symptoms can worsen if not properly treated. Your doctor of optometry at The Vision Place can detect and treat conjunctivitis to ensure you have optimum vision and eye health.
The conjunctiva is the clear tissue that lines the inside of the eye and surrounds the eyeball. Bacteria, viruses, allergens or chemical irritants can cause irritation of this tissue, leading to a variety of troublesome symptoms, such as a burning sensation, itching, redness, swelling, a gritty feeling, increased sensitivity to light and crusting on the eyelids. This condition is referred to as “pink eye,” and it is highly contagious, spreading from person to person in the family or in the social group.
Your San Antonio eye doctor can treat cases of pink eye easily, so you can resume your normal activities without eye discomfort. Careful hand washing is critical for preventing the transmission of pink eye. Treatment of the problem depends on the source of the problem. If the inflammation is bacterial in origin, antibiotic eye drops will eliminate the infection. However, if the infection is viral, antibiotics won’t be effective, and your eye doctor will advise you on ways to reduce the symptoms, such as the use of artificial tears, moist compresses or using glasses instead of contacts for a period of time.
