Luckily, cancer in the eye is a rare occurrence.  Many times they are undetected since they often do not produce any visual disturbance.  A good reason to have your eyes checked even though you have good vision.  In 2018, the American Cancer Society estimated the occurrence of primary cancer in the eye and orbit (the tissues behind the eyeball) to be 3,540 in the US.  Slightly more common in men, 60%, than women.  If caught early, the survival rate is above 80%.

Secondary cancers, metastatic, are actually more common than primary eye cancers.  The most common tumors to metastasize to the eye are from Breast Cancer in women and Lung cancer in men. Gastrointestinal Tract tumors are also possibilities.  Metastatic cancer in the eye is spread through the vascular system since there are no lymph nodes in the eye.  The most common place for metastatic cancer is in the Choroid which is the main vascular system of the eye.  It is only seen through the eye exam when looking at the Retina.  These may produce visual disturbances such as flashing lights, floating spots or distorted vision.  The metastasis may also occur on the eye or eyelid or behind the eye in the orbit which would cause the eye to protrude or have an eye turn.

Periodic eye exams are an important part of everyone’s health care, even if you have no trouble with your vision.
