Cataract Awareness From Your Optometrist In San Antonio

senior male getting cataract exam

Causes & Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts usually develop with age, as the tissue in your eyes begins to degenerate. Around this time, your eyes will start to appear filmy or cloudy. You may see halos around lights or find it difficult to see clearly at night. You'll also experience cloudy vision, which can hobble your ability to drive, read, and perform other activities.

While most people who suffer from cataracts get them as they age, some cases are congenital. Steroid use, eye injuries, and diabetes can also cause cataracts.

How Our Eye Doctor in San Antonio Treats Cataracts

We are usually able to check for cataracts using a bright light, which can detect the cloudy hue of the cataracts. We can dilate your eyes as well, to confirm a suspected cataract.

When cataracts are in the early stages, our eye doctor usually recommends a watch-and-wait approach. Cataracts are usually mild enough in the early stages that you can perform your daily activities, although you may need glare-blocking glasses for night driving.

When your cataracts prevent you from doing activities of daily life safely, we may recommend surgery. Since cataracts do not grow back after surgery, this is an effective treatment. Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure, and while it carries some risks, you can rest assured that our experienced professionals will take care you during the surgery process.

When your cataracts get to this stage, we will refer you out for surgery. We'll take care of everything you need during your surgery,  as well as make sure your vision needs are met once the cataracts have been removed.
